Server Provisioning
This page should help you gather the required information to have the Academic Operations Linux team provision a new server.
How to request
Send an email with the relevant information to ao-infrastructure@tamu.edu
Required information
- Fully-qualified domain name (dept-whatever.something.tamu.edu)
- Note: The hostname needs to comply with the system naming standard
- Operating System choice
- Redhat Enterprise Linux 8, 9, or 10
- Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, 26.04
- GUI or no GUI
- NetID of the server's 'owner'
- If the system is a departmental server, then there is no 'owner'
- If the system is a research server, the NetID of the faculty owner should be provided
- List of system-wide software that should be installed
- For data volumes and other filesystems, access control groups can be created and applied. If the system requires this, provide a detailed explanation of the relevant path(s), group(s), and NetID(s).
- For example: The /data/dataset1 directory should be accessible to only the following users: NetID1, NetID2, NetID3
- Data volume encryption requirements, if any
Optional information
- TAMU Inventory Asset Number
- Physical location of the server
- City, State
- Building/address
- Room Number
- Rack Number and U position
Post Provisioning Steps
- Populate the
loginsandadminsgroups for the system as necessary - Provide the owner/user with a link to this site for helpful information
- Set expectations with the user about:
- Monthly maintenance windows, mandatory reboots, and how to request a deferral
- IT does not provide or manage backups
- How to request help
