College of Engineering File Storage on Linux

This document should help you create and access your College of Engineering home directory.

Create Home Directory

This process is used to create your home directory before use on Linux. You must use a computer other than the Linux computer. If these instructions do not work for you, please visit ZACH 383 to get help.

Instructions for MacOS

1. Open Finder

2. Open the menu: Go > Connect to Server (Command + K)

3. Type in one of the following addresses based on your classification, make sure to replace yourNetID with your TAMU NetID:

   • Undergraduate Students:
     • smb://AUTH\yourNetID@coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu/Ugrads
   • Graduate Students:
     • smb://AUTH\yourNetID@coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu/Grads
   • Faculty:
     • smb://AUTH\yourNetID@coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu/Faculty
   • Staff:
     • smb://AUTH\yourNetID@coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu/Staff

4. Sign in by making sure the Name: appears as AUTH\yourNetID and then fill in your password.

If a window pops up with a folder titled with your classification, you are all set. For new students this should be empty, for others it may already contain data. If something like the following pops up, your home directory has been created, and you are ready to sign-in on the windows machines.

Instructions for Windows

1. Open the File Explorer

2. Right Click “This PC” and choose “Map Network Drive…”

3. Type the address for the College of Engineering file share

   • Undergraduate Students:
     • \\coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu\Ugrads
   • Graduate Students
     • \\coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu\Grads
   • Faculty
     • \\coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu\Faculty
   • Staff
     • \\coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu\Staff

4. Sign in by filling out with AUTH\yourNetID

If a window pops up with a folder titled with your classification, you are all set. For new students this should be empty, for others it may already contain data. If something like the following pops up, your home directory has been created, and you are ready to sign-in on the windows machines.

Accessing your storage on Linux

The following procedure will help you get connected to your home directory or research storage.

1. Open the file explorer and click on “+ Other Locations” on the left-hand side menu

2. On the bottom of the page, click on the text box reading “Enter server address…” next to “connect to server” and enter: smb://coe-fs.engr.tamu.edu/<share>

3. If you are mounting your home directory, replace <share> with ugrads, grads, faculty, or staff depending on your classification. For research drives, research.

4. Press the enter key

5. You’ll be presented with an authentication window.

6. Select “Registered user”

7. Enter your NetID in the username field

8. Enter AUTH in the domain field

9. Enter your NetID password

Your directory will be mounted and opened automatically. You can access from the sidebar of the file explorer or from the terminal at /run/user/<your UIN>/gvfs/smb-share:*
